Pirates O Plenty

It seems like I’ve been recording my share of Pirate songs lately.  My favorite Pirate song is probably “Steven the Pirate” by Steven Courtney.

Take a ride on the Imaginary Motor Plane and visit Pirate Island with Stevo…

I think Steve kind of looks like a Pirate even when he isn’t dressed like one…

This Captain Bogg and Salty Song is also worthy of plunder…

Here’s a pic of Old Captain Jack Himself – Raven Locks Swaying in the Ocean Breeze…See the resemblance?  Mmmmm, me neither.

The Ballad of Captain Jack…

This was the original parody…

My Mom is a Pirate…

4 Monkey Pirates…

And of course you can’t have a blog about Pirate songs without Relient K.  This is fun…

Hey Kid, Wanna be in the Band?

When I was little, all I wanted to be was a musician.  Sure, there were days I wanted to be an Astronaut or President or a Baseball Player, but I knew no matter what else I was doing, that I would make music.  If you would have told the 9 year old Fred that on May 21st, 2011 at the age of 50 he would be part of a Guinness Book of World Records certified event promoted by a local radio station where they let him talk on the radio and play music, AND, not only that, but he would get to perform on stage, playing goofy songs he wrote, with incredibly talented (and limber) friends and family, AND, he would get to join the most popular kids band around as part of the Suitcase Musicians, AND would do it all with a group of dedicated, fun, talented, amazing friends who also happen to be his co-workers – I think the 9 year old Fred would have only had this response – BEST DAY EVER!!!!!!!!  Thank you family and friends, for making a little boys dreams come true!

42 Monkeys

Steven Courtney and I wrote 42 Monkeys the year we both turned 42.  We have both recorded it several times.  It’s a fun song and kids and parents both seem to enjoy it.  I generally get some Mom smiles when we sing, “42 Monkeys tried to steal my mom. Tried to take her to the Monkey prom!”  Kids just like the word Monkey. It’s a fun word to sing and to say.

I had my first chance to perform with Steve’s new band – The Suitcase Musicians.  The video turned out quite nice.  Thanks to everyone who came out to the show that day to help us Celebrate Steven’s 5000th show and my son Zack’s Birthday!

I Saw the Light

“I Saw the Light” was written by Hank Williams Sr. in 1948. It has been recorded many times by the likes of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Etta James, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

One of my favorite YouTube versions is by David Crowder Band

Hank Williams Jr. and Many Famous Friends sing it too!

And lastly, a guy with a ukulele at 4am gives it a shot…

Five Thousand!!!

Today we are celebrating my friend Steven Courtney’s 5000th concert. That’s Five Freaking Thousand.  Think about that.  Start counting, 1, 2, 3, 4 and go to 5000!  That’s 250 shows a year for 20 years.  Cal Ripken was not that much of an iron man. One of my favorite quotes from Norkey (as he is lovingly called by friends and family)…a little boy at a school show said to him, “You mean you get paid to do this?” And Steven replied, “No, I get paid to load up my gear, drive to the show, set up my gear, tear it back down after the show, load it back up in the van, and drive it back home. In between I get to do what I love for FREE!”

Best line ever!

Here’s to you Steven Courtney. You’ve brought a million smiles in those Happy Go Lucky Shoes.

And the Steven Courtney Channel Version by Mr. Norkey hisself.
